Sunderland reached out to Frank Zambo-Anguissa’s agent from Napoli on Wednesday in their search for midfield reinforcements, according to reports. The Black Cats have been eyeing a potential £8.7 million deal with Granit Xhaka from Bayer Leverkusen, but they are exploring other options as well.
Renowned transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has provided updates on Sunderland’s interest in Xhaka, revealing ongoing talks with the player while also contacting Anguissa’s representatives. However, Napoli’s positive contract talks seem to have halted any hopes of Anguissa moving to Sunderland.
Romano stated: “Sunderland are working on a deal for Xhaka but also approached Anguissa’s agent. Napoli offered Anguissa an extended contract until 2028, and they are confident of finalizing the deal soon.”
Anguissa, who previously played for Fulham, Marseille, and Villarreal, joined Napoli in 2022 and was part of their Serie A winning squad last season. He has also represented Cameroon with 60 senior caps and five goals.
Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen’s Simon Rolfes mentioned in an interview with Bild that Xhaka’s future will be decided soon, despite interest from Sunderland. Rolfes emphasized the importance of finalizing the squad and expects an imminent decision on Xhaka’s future.
