Simon Rolfes, the sporting director of Leverkusen, has made it clear that the Bundesliga club’s main interest is to retain Granit Xhaka this summer, despite interest from Sunderland. Rolfes stated that Xhaka is a crucial player for the team and club and that any potential transfer would only happen if it benefited all parties involved.
Leverkusen is reported to be asking for €20m for Xhaka, who still has three years left on his contract with the club. Rolfes emphasized the importance of clarity in Xhaka’s situation and stated that the issue would not be dragged out throughout the entire transfer window.
Although Saudi club NEOM SC has withdrawn from the race to sign Xhaka, Sunderland remains interested in the midfielder due to his valuable experience at the highest level. Xhaka, who turns 33 in September, has been a key player for Leverkusen and Switzerland, serving as the captain for the latter.
Sunderland, who have already made six signings this summer, including three midfielders, continue to search for reinforcements in defense, goalkeeping, and attacking positions. The Black Cats are also looking to offload several fringe players to make room for potential new arrivals.
