Despite initial doubts about his suitability, Graham Potter praised Soucek’s goalscoring record and personality after a recent performance for West Ham. The Hammers rejected Everton’s bid for Soucek, prompting Everton to pivot and sign Merlin Rohl as a late alternative.
Rohl, a Germany Under-21 international, joined Everton on an initial loan deal from SC Freiburg, with an obligation-to-buy clause if Everton avoid relegation. Moyes expressed his excitement about adding Rohl to the midfield and highlighted his qualities as an exciting prospect for the club.
Rohl, standing at 6ft 3ins, shares similarities with Soucek in terms of physicality and playing style. While Rohl may need to improve his goalscoring record, Moyes believes he can contribute effectively alongside creative players like Jack Grealish and Dwight McNeil.
Everton’s bid for Soucek reportedly included an initial £15 million plus £2 million in add-ons. Not willing to sell Soucek without a suitable replacement, West Ham kept the midfielder, who has been a key player for them in recent seasons.
