After facing challenges at Leeds United, Isaac Schmidt has expressed his desire to make a permanent move to Werder Bremen in the long term. The Swiss international is currently on loan at the German club for the season, with an option-to-buy clause in his contract. While the exact fee has not been disclosed, it is expected to be over £1.25 million when accounting for amortisation.
Schmidt made a strong start at Bremen, scoring on his debut against Bayer Leverkusen before the international break. His main goal is to secure regular playing time and earn a spot in the Swiss World Cup squad next year. However, he has also made it clear that he hopes to stay at Werder Bremen for an extended period.
“I am currently looking for an apartment to truly settle in Bremen. I would love to continue playing for Werder for a longer period of time, that’s my ultimate goal,” Schmidt shared in an interview with Deich Stube. “I understand that my performance here will play a significant role in that decision. It’s been a difficult period for me as a footballer, so this past week has been a dream come true.”
Schmidt had minimal playing time at Leeds last season and was not included in any matchday squads under Daniel Farke this season before his move to Bremen. The 25-year-old full-back arrived at Leeds from St Gallen on a four-year deal, but struggled to establish himself under Farke, making just 14 appearances.
