Enzo Maresca faced questions regarding the potential loan move of Marc Guiu ahead of Chelsea’s upcoming match against Sunderland. Initially expected to spend the season on loan at the Stadium of Light, Guiu was recalled to Chelsea due to an injury to Liam Delap.
Despite struggling for consistent playing time upon his return to West London, Guiu managed to find the back of the net in a convincing 5-1 victory over Ajax earlier in the week. With the clash between Chelsea and Sunderland looming, Maresca addressed inquiries regarding the Spanish striker’s future.
During his pre-match press conference, Maresca refrained from providing a definitive answer on whether Guiu would be loaned out again, stating, “In football, things can change very quickly, for everyone; for players, for managers, for everyone. It is very difficult to say.”
However, Maresca did express that Guiu is prepared to feature more in the Premier League, indicating his readiness to start matches. The Chelsea manager emphasized Guiu’s versatility and potential impact on the team, particularly alongside Joao Pedro.
As Delap nears his return from injury, the situation becomes complex for Guiu. If Chelsea opt to loan him out once more, Sunderland would be the only viable destination. Nonetheless, Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris suggested that the club is not currently seeking a striker, posing a challenge for Guiu given his prior appearances for both sides this season.
Le Bris acknowledged the potential loan scenario but highlighted Sunderland’s current squad strength in the striking department, noting that they do not require additional reinforcements at the moment. This leaves Guiu in a limbo as he navigates the decision-making process regarding his future loan opportunities.
