Simon Jordan has acknowledged that he had higher expectations for Leeds United this season, despite their recent 3-1 victory over Chelsea.
The win against Chelsea was a much-needed boost for Leeds, lifting them out of the relegation zone and dispelling the negative atmosphere around Elland Road. Prior to this victory, Leeds had suffered four consecutive losses. Manager Daniel Farke was under pressure to deliver results to secure his job and to rejuvenate the team’s confidence during a challenging period of the season.
However, Jordan, while admitting his admiration for the club, expressed disappointment in Leeds’ performance this season. He believed that Leeds, coming off a successful period under Marcelo Bielsa, should have shown more courage and improvement upon entering the Premier League. Jordan highlighted that Leeds, being a bigger club than Sunderland, should have displayed better football upon their top-flight return.
“I expected Leeds United to be better than Sunderland,” said Jordan on talkSPORT. “I thought they would learn from their previous experiences and play at a higher level once in the Premier League.”
Jordan emphasized that while there is a place for physicality and competitiveness in Leeds’ playstyle, he envisioned the club being more dynamic and assertive this season. He had anticipated Leeds building on their successful run under Bielsa to make a strong impact in the league.
Reflecting on Leeds’ progression, Jordan noted that the team faced challenges with managerial changes and player confidence. He credited Leeds for their performance against Chelsea but felt that the Blues’ own shortcomings contributed to the outcome.
