Former Ipswich Town forward Martyn Waghorn has made a surprising return to the footballing world by signing with eighth-tier English football club, Anstey Nomads. At 35 years old, Waghorn had officially retired from the sport back in February, only to have a change of heart and commit to playing once again.
Anstey Nomads, who currently sit fourth in the Northern Premier League Midlands section, welcomed Waghorn to their squad, where he will reunite with former Ipswich Town adversary David Nugent. The club excitedly announced Waghorn’s signing ahead of their upcoming match against Bourne Town, inviting fans to come and witness his return to the pitch.
Having last played for Northampton Town before being released in 2024, Waghorn kept his skills sharp by playing in the Baller League, impressively scoring 12 goals in just nine appearances. His time with Ipswich Town, where he was signed for £250,000 from Rangers and netted 16 goals in 46 games in the 2017/18 season, remains a highlight in his career before making a move to Derby in a deal worth up to £7.5 million.
