Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna has confirmed that the club will assess the possibility of bringing Conor Chaplin back early from his loan spell at Portsmouth following their upcoming match on Sunday.
Chaplin, who returned to Portsmouth late in the summer transfer window, has been a regular feature in John Mousinho’s side, making 19 appearances in the Championship and contributing one assist. Despite his contributions, Ipswich has a recall clause in his loan agreement that can be activated during the January transfer window.
In an interview with the East Anglian Daily Times, McKenna stated that discussions regarding Ipswich’s January plans will begin after the weekend’s clash with Portsmouth. He emphasized the need to evaluate the squad over the past four months and consider potential additions or adjustments to the team, including players currently out on loan like Chaplin.
Ipswich’s recent victory over Oxford United propelled them to the second spot in the Championship table, eight points behind league leaders Coventry City. With promotion aspirations in mind, McKenna acknowledged the importance of analyzing the squad and making necessary improvements to sustain their strong position.
The Tractor Boys will face Portsmouth on Sunday at Fratton Park, with the hosts looking to avoid slipping into the relegation zone.
While Chaplin has not delivered the desired attacking threat at Portsmouth, his potential recall by Ipswich could impact both clubs.
