Newcastle Issue Sandro Tonali Injury Update After Derby Absence

Newcastle United have provided clarity on Sandro Tonali’s injury situation after the midfielder missed their disappointing 2-1 defeat to Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby.

The Italian international was absent from the squad at St James’ Park, raising concerns among fans—especially given his importance to Eddie Howe’s midfield setup.

Injury Not Serious, But Poor Timing

Speaking after the match, Howe reassured supporters that Tonali’s injury is not a long-term concern. However, he admitted the derby came just too soon in the midfielder’s recovery timeline.

“It’s not a longer-term problem, but it was too quick a turnaround by a couple of days for him,” Howe explained.

Tonali had recently returned from illness to feature in Newcastle’s heavy Champions League defeat to FC Barcelona, but suffered a groin issue during that match, forcing him off early.

That setback ultimately ruled him out of the crucial derby clash.

Midfield Absences Felt Deeply

Newcastle’s struggles against Sunderland highlighted just how important Tonali is to the team. Howe revealed that the absence of multiple key midfielders left the side unbalanced.

Alongside Tonali, both Bruno Guimarães and Lewis Miley were unavailable—leaving Newcastle without their usual technical core in midfield.

“We missed our technicians today… that meant our midfield was reshuffled,” Howe admitted.

Without that control and composure, Newcastle found it difficult to dictate play, ultimately contributing to their defeat and a drop to 12th in the Premier League table.

Italy Call-Up Still Expected

Despite missing the derby, Tonali is still expected to link up with the Italy national football team during the international break.

Italy face a crucial period as they attempt to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup—a tournament they have not reached since 2014, despite winning UEFA Euro 2020.

Tonali will undergo further assessment by Italy’s medical staff, but current indications suggest his injury is minor enough for him to remain involved.

A Frustrating Week for Tonali

The 25-year-old has endured a stop-start period in recent weeks. He missed Newcastle’s win over Chelsea due to illness, returned briefly in Europe, and then suffered the groin issue that kept him out of the derby.

For a player still building rhythm after previous disruptions in his career, the timing is far from ideal.

Focus Turns to Crystal Palace Return

Newcastle will now look ahead to their return from the international break, where they face Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

There is optimism that Tonali will be fit and available for that clash, providing a much-needed boost to Howe’s midfield options.

With only a handful of games remaining, Newcastle need to regain momentum quickly if they are to salvage their season.

Key Player, Key Moment

Tonali’s absence against Sunderland served as a reminder of his growing influence at Newcastle. His ability to control tempo, link play, and provide technical quality makes him a vital component of Howe’s system.

While the injury is not serious, managing his recovery carefully will be crucial—both for club and country.

Because as Newcastle discovered in the derby, without their midfield engine, the entire system begins to falter.
