Crystal Palace are reportedly among a group of clubs closely monitoring Lille’s rising star Ngal’ayel Mukau ahead of the summer transfer window, according to reports from L’Equipe.
The young midfielder has become a top target for the Eagles after delivering a series of mesmerising performances in the heart of the French side’s engine room.
Mukau, who has earned significant praise for his “enormous qualities,” originally made his name as a traditional defensive midfielder. However, under the guidance of Bruno Genesio, he has successfully transitioned into a more advanced, attacking role this season.
The 21-year-old possesses a highly sought-after profile; he is equally adept at breaking up opposition play, intercepting dangerous passes, and shielding the backline as he is at driving his team forward. This multifaceted skillset is exactly what the Palace hierarchy believes is currently missing from the center of the park.
For the past two seasons, the South London club has struggled to fill a gaping hole in their midfield. Cheick Doucoure has been sidelined for the vast majority of that period, leaving the squad without its primary anchor.
While the likes of Jefferson Lerma, Will Hughes, and Daichi Kamada have all stepped in to provide cover, the club is still in desperate need of a specialist capable of anchoring the midfield. Mukau is increasingly viewed as the perfect fit to finally address that deficiency.
However, Crystal Palace will face stiff competition for his signature. Premier League rivals West Ham United are also reportedly keen on the youngster as they look to bolster their own options in the middle of the pitch.
It remains to be seen how aggressively Palace will pursue the deal, but the Eagles appear poised for a total midfield reconstruction this summer. The club’s “chief conductor,” Adam Wharton, is widely expected to depart at the end of the campaign, with several European heavyweights currently circling the England international. Finding a replacement for his creative output will be a priority.
The changes won’t stop in the midfield, either. Palace are still in the market for an experienced, high-level center-half to fill the void left by Marc Guehi following his high-profile exit during the winter window.
Furthermore, the club is looking to add a clinical forward who can also contribute to the creative side of the game. Adding another genuine “difference-maker” in the final third is seen as essential if the team is to progress next season.
The most significant transformation, however, is likely to take place in the dugout. Oliver Glasner is set to leave Selhurst Park following a remarkably successful tenure. Replacing the Austrian tactician with a manager capable of carrying the torch will be the biggest challenge facing chairman Steve Parish this summer.
