Sunderland could be at the center of one of the summer’s most intriguing transfer sagas, with Chelsea reportedly preparing a complex part-exchange deal to land one of the Premier League’s breakout stars.
At the heart of the story is Dutch goalkeeper Robin Roefs, who has enjoyed a sensational debut season in England. The 23-year-old has been a standout performer for Sunderland, recording nine clean sheets in 30 appearances before injury sidelined him in recent weeks. Signed for just £9 million from NEC Nijmegen last summer, Roefs’ value has skyrocketed—now reportedly reaching as high as £60 million.
Chelsea are among the clubs leading the race for his signature, with Liverpool and Manchester City also keeping close tabs on his situation. However, the London club may not be willing to meet Sunderland’s full asking price in cash.
Instead, reports suggest Chelsea are exploring a player-plus-cash deal that would see young Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders move in the opposite direction. Currently on loan at Strasbourg, the 20-year-old has impressed in Ligue 1 and is widely regarded as one of Europe’s most promising goalkeeping prospects.

For Sunderland, however, the decision is far from straightforward.
Roefs has been instrumental in their return to the Premier League, providing stability and confidence at the back. Letting him go, even for a significant profit, would leave a major gap in the squad. While Penders is highly rated, he remains relatively untested at the highest level, raising questions about whether he could immediately fill Roefs’ shoes.
The club’s strong negotiating position—thanks to Roefs’ long-term contract running until 2030—means they are under no pressure to sell. But with interest from multiple elite clubs and the possibility of a lucrative deal on the table, Sunderland must carefully weigh their options.
