Rangers manager Danny Röhl has addressed questions surrounding his decision to leave Emmanuel Fernandez out of the starting lineup following the international break.
Despite Fernandez’s recent rise with the Nigeria national team, Röhl opted to keep the defender on the bench during Rangers’ convincing 4-2 victory over Dundee.
Manager Explains Selection Call
Fernandez had been a regular starter prior to the March international window, making five consecutive appearances in the Scottish Premiership. However, his involvement with Nigeria—where he made his debut and even scored in his first start—came with heavy travel demands.
Röhl explained that fatigue and squad depth played a key role in his decision.
“Manny travelled a lot, it was his first experience with the national team,” Röhl said. “We have strong options in defence, and it’s important for competition within the squad.”
Instead, the Rangers boss relied on John Souttar and Nasser Djiga at centre-back, a partnership that helped secure all three points.
Strong Competition in Defence
Röhl emphasized that competition is essential to maintaining high standards within the team. With multiple defensive options available, including players returning to fitness, no position is guaranteed.
“We have competition in this position, and it’s good for us and Manny to keep pushing,” he added.
The manager also pointed to the result as justification for his decision, stating that the 4-2 win showed his selection choices were effective.
Fernandez Still in the Picture
While he was an unused substitute against Dundee, Fernandez remains firmly in contention for upcoming fixtures, including the clash against Falkirk.
The young defender has enjoyed a solid season overall, contributing seven goals in 29 appearances for both club and country—a notable return for a centre-back.
