Leicester Premier League title winner Danny Simpson recently shared that he came very close to signing for Celtic. In the summer of 2019, the Scottish club was in the market for a right-back and Simpson was being considered.
At the time, his contract with Leicester had expired and it was just a few months after Brendan Rodgers had left Celtic for Leicester. Despite the potential, Simpson ultimately didn’t end up signing with Celtic, which frustrates him.
Instead, the 36-year-old ended up joining Huddersfield. He expressed his disappointment on the Filthy Fellas Podcast via Football Scotland, stating, “I fell out with my agent because something happened with Celtic. That was why I turned the offer down. Celtic was on the table, it was European football, and more trophies were in the picture. I spoke to Neil Lennon, Kolo Toure, and Brendan about it, but it fell through in the end.”
In the end, Celtic went with Hatem Abd Elhamed instead of Simpson. While Abd Elhamed had a promising start with the club, he ultimately succumbed to homesickness and left in 2021 after only 30 appearances.
Simpson was genuinely interested in a move to Celtic and was drawn by the club’s appeal. Unfortunately, the move didn’t come to fruition, leaving Simpson without a club at 36.
