West Ham United is one of several clubs interested in bringing former Barcelona midfielder Sergi Roberto on board, as reported by Spanish outlet Sport (Page 7).

The 32-year-old became a free agent in June after his contract with Barcelona came to an end. With a successful career at the Catalan club that included numerous domestic and European victories, Roberto confirmed his departure from the Camp Nou over the weekend, ready to take on a new challenge.

West Ham’s interest in acquiring the services of the experienced La Masia graduate has been ongoing for weeks. Manager Julen Lopetegui’s past work with Roberto during his time coaching the Spain national team could give the Hammers an edge in securing the midfielder.

Alongside West Ham, other clubs such as Sevilla, Fiorentina, AS Roma, Como, and Ajax are also competing for Roberto’s signature. With his wealth of experience and leadership skills, Roberto could prove to be a valuable addition to any team.

As West Ham aims to strengthen their squad and compete for European qualification in the upcoming Premier League season, securing a deal for Roberto is a priority. The Irons kick off their 2024/25 campaign this Saturday at the London Stadium against Aston Villa.

In addition to pursuing Roberto, West Ham has been actively involved in the transfer market, signing players like Niclas Fullkrug, Max Kilman, Wes Foderingham, Crysencio Summerville, Luis Guilherme, Jean-Clair Todibo, and Guido Rodriguez. Talks are also underway for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, as the club looks to potentially upgrade Vladimir Coufal.

Roberto’s versatility in playing various positions during his time at Barcelona, despite being a natural central midfielder, makes him an attractive prospect for West Ham. His ability to cover multiple areas of the pitch, especially on a free transfer, would be a smart move for the Hammers to consider.
