Charlie Cresswell had a promising start at Toulouse after his departure from Leeds United last summer, but everything changed dramatically on Saturday evening.
The young England U21 defender had a difficult season with Leeds in 2023-24 and was eventually sold. He returned after a loan spell at Millwall, hoping to make an impact, but only managed seven appearances under Daniel Farke before a falling out led to his departure. It was no surprise he was sold in the summer, but his decision to move to France was unexpected.
Cresswell made a solid start in Ligue 1, playing in all three matches for Toulouse and contributing to draws against Nice and Nantes. However, his performance against Marseille was disastrous.
He was at fault for all three of Marseille’s goals, earning a dismal 2/10 rating from Maxi Foot. Greenwood took advantage of Cresswell’s mistakes, scoring two goals and benefitting from a Cresswell pass for his second. To make matters worse, Cresswell deflected a shot for an own goal before being substituted in the 63rd minute.
Despite the disappointing performance, Cresswell had spoken highly of his move to Toulouse from Leeds, considering it a step up. However, the harsh reality of his struggles against Marseille may have dampened his enthusiasm.
While he may have believed he had made a positive career move, Cresswell’s poor showing against Marseille highlighted the challenges he faces in adapting to the new league and environment. His comments about the passionate atmosphere in French football may not have provided much solace after such a difficult match.
