Aston Villa’s recent deal to sell Jaden Philogene to Hull City has been revealed to include a £15 million buy-back clause, as shared by Hull Live. Vice-chairman Tan Kesler expressed the club’s intention to establish more agreements like this, citing its potential for helping the Tigers in their pursuit of promotion to the Premier League. While acknowledging that such deals can be complex, Kesler emphasized that the club’s primary focus is on overall success rather than individual interests.
Notably, the buy-back clause will only be activated if Hull City and Aston Villa find themselves in the same division. This offers some reassurance to Tigers fans, knowing that Philogene’s potential return will depend on their team’s success.
Having initially joined Aston Villa in 2018 after starting out at the Pro:Direct Academy, Philogene made limited appearances for the first team before an underwhelming loan spell at Stoke City. However, he showed promise at Cardiff last season, playing 39 matches and scoring five goals.
Hull City manager Liam Rosenior expressed early interest in Philogene, initially seeking a loan deal. However, he was pleasantly surprised when negotiations resulted in a £5 million permanent transfer on deadline day. Philogene signed a three-year contract with the option for a fourth year.
Speaking to Hull Live, Kesler explained the reasoning behind the buy-back clause, highlighting its potential benefits for both parties:
“The buy-back clause can be interpreted negatively or very positively. We create a win-win situation by sharing certain rights with opportunities for competition. This allows us to secure a talented player while also protecting our initial investment.”
Kesler further clarified that the agreement establishes a defined value based on performance, which aids decision-making in the market. While Aston Villa has the first choice to bring Philogene back for £15 million if they secure promotion to the Premier League, an offer exceeding that value would warrant discussion.
