Wolves manager Gary O’Neil has shared his thoughts on Manchester City’s controversial injury-time victory at Molineux, where Pep Guardiola’s side secured a 2-1 win.
John Stones’ last-minute goal was initially disallowed by referee Chris Kavanaugh due to an offside call, but VAR intervened and overturned the decision after replays showed no interference from Bernardo Silva. O’Neil admitted he was not optimistic when the referee went to review the incident on the pitchside monitor.
“I have been in similar situations before and they have not gone in our favor, so I wasn’t holding my breath for this one,” O’Neil told Sky Sports. “There is a grey area in these situations and it could have gone either way. Once it was like that, I didn’t think it would go our way.”
Reflecting on a similar disallowed goal against West Ham last season, O’Neil refrained from making excuses. “We raised the issue with referees and provided evidence that the West Ham goalkeeper had a clear view, but the decision stood. The same argument could be made here, but we have to accept it,” he said.
While disappointed with the result, O’Neil praised his players for their efforts and acknowledged that they were unfortunate to come away empty-handed. Wolves have struggled this season with seven losses and one draw in the Premier League so far, and will face Brighton in their upcoming match on October 26.
