talkSPORT’s Alex Crook has put forth a far-fetched and frankly ludicrous idea regarding a potential replacement for David Moyes as West Ham manager, should the club decide to part ways with him at the end of the season.
Following Steve Cooper’s recent dismissal from Nottingham Forest, with the team hovering just outside the relegation zone, and with David Moyes steering West Ham to a commendable sixth position in the Premier League table, the recent suggestion seems to be quite outlandish.
West Ham’s fortunes have notably improved in recent times after a lackluster period extending from September to November. During that challenging phase, Cooper’s name was linked as a potential replacement for Moyes, a proposition which at the time seemed implausible. While not a fervent supporter of Moyes, it’s challenging to dispute the positive impact he’s had since returning for his second stint at the helm of West Ham four years ago.
Nonetheless, reports have emerged indicating that the 60-year-old may be moved on at the conclusion of the 2023/24 season. If indeed a managerial change is on the horizon, the club should undeniably seek a substantial upgrade on the current setup under Moyes.
In line with this, the recent suggestion from talkSPORT appears wholly unbelievable. Alex Crook has hinted on the Premier League All Access Podcast that Cooper might be on the radar for West Ham’s owners should they opt to part ways with Moyes, citing Cooper’s credentials as a project manager and suggesting that he could find himself in contention for the West Ham role.
This proposed move from the Hammers board, if taken seriously, could be disastrous, as Cooper, despite not being a poor manager, falls short of Moyes’ caliber. Moreover, West Ham should be focused on making genuine progress, and opting for a downgrade on the current managerial setup would be counterproductive.
Cooper’s tenure at Forest, despite significant expenditure and potential limitations on player choices, was deemed underwhelming, especially given the club’s performances this season. While West Ham’s decision to potentially replace Moyes at the season’s end remains a possibility, it is imperative that they aim to secure the services of a top-class manager to lead the club forward, should they choose to part ways with the accomplished Scot.
