Wolves striker Matheus Cunha faced a reduced suspension after a scuffle with Ipswich Town’s security staff. The incident, which occurred after a match on December 14, involved Cunha snatching and breaking a pair of glasses from a staff member, whom he also elbowed in the back of the head.
Cunha accepted an FA charge of misconduct and offered to pay for a new pair of glasses as well as writing a letter of apology to the staff member. Despite his prompt acceptance of the charge and clean disciplinary record, Cunha was still handed a two-match suspension and a reduced fine. He missed a recent match against Nottingham Forest and will also sit out an FA Cup tie against Bristol City.
The altercation with the security staff took place after the final whistle and involved Cunha’s teammate Rayan Ait-Nouri, who was sent off. Cunha claimed he was only trying to protect Ait-Nouri from the Ipswich staff and did not intend to harm anyone. However, the regulatory commission viewed his actions as highly improper and reduced his proposed ban from three to two matches.
Despite Cunha’s remorse and willingness to pay for damages, the commission ultimately did not fully accept his version of events. Nevertheless, Cunha will serve his suspension and hopes to put this incident behind him as Wolves continue their season.
