Sky Sports analyst Jamie Carragher has selected Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario for his Premier League Team of the Season up until now.
Tottenham has had a strong start to the season, currently sitting in fifth place in the standings, just six points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool. Vicario has been a standout performer for the team, with many considering him their best player.
Vicario was signed by Tottenham from Serie A side Empoli in the summer for a bargain price of £17 million, and despite being relatively unknown at the time, he has quickly established himself as one of the top goalkeepers in the Premier League.
His exceptional shot-stopping ability and adeptness at dealing with Tottenham’s high line have been crucial in saving the team on numerous occasions this season.
Carragher, although firm in his belief that Alisson Becker of Liverpool is the best goalkeeper in the world, still chose Vicario for his Team of the Season, citing his newness to the Premier League and his impressive xG prevention stats.
While other Tottenham players like James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, and Heung-min Son have received praise for their performances, Vicario’s impact has been particularly significant. His ability to save goals is evidenced by Tottenham’s xGA stats, where they have only conceded 29 goals despite an xGA of 40.82, largely due to Vicario’s contributions.
If Vicario can maintain his current form, he could be instrumental in leading Tottenham back to the Champions League, as his performances have been crucial in keeping the team competitive at the top of the league.
