Sunderland is making preparations to make an initial official bid for Jhon Lucumi, a defender linked with Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur, despite Bologna’s reluctance to let him go.
The Black Cats have been making waves with their spending this summer, attracting attention even in Germany. They have brought in five new players, breaking transfer records with some of their acquisitions. Habib Diarra, costing around £30m from Strasbourg, currently holds the title of their most expensive signing.

Setting their sights on Italy, Sunderland has honed in on Bologna’s 27-year-old defender, who has piqued the interest of Premier League clubs. Aston Villa and Tottenham are both eyeing Lucumi, particularly if Tottenham lose Cristian Romero.
Having played over 100 games for Bologna since 2022, with 15 in European competitions, Lucumi has proven himself in Serie A. Now, Sunderland is ready to make an official bid for him, having reached out to Bologna in the past 24 hours to test their resolve.

While Bologna wishes to retain Lucumi, his expiring contract might sway their decision if a tempting offer comes in. With experience in playing for Colombia in almost 30 matches, Lucumi brings international pedigree to any team.
If Sunderland’s bid is accepted, it remains to be seen if Aston Villa or Tottenham will join the race. Aston Villa is also considering a move for Yann Bisseck, another Serie A center-back.
