According to recent reports, both Sunderland and Bournemouth have seen sizeable offers for Lille defender Bafode Diakite rejected by the French club. Despite already being active in the summer transfer window, Sunderland continues to seek defensive reinforcements, with Diakite emerging as a potential target. The Black Cats have made significant moves, bringing in five new players and securing a permanent deal for Enzo Le Fée, who was on loan in January.
In their pursuit of Diakite, both Sunderland and Bournemouth are said to have submitted bids in the vicinity of £23.3 million, only to have them turned down by Lille. The Ligue 1 outfit is reportedly standing firm on their valuation of the 24-year-old center-back, demanding a fee closer to £34.6 million. Despite the rejected offers, it is understood that Diakite is eager to make a move to the Premier League, fueling speculation about his potential transfer.
Having started his professional career at Toulouse before joining Lille in 2022 for a fee of around £2.6 million, Diakite has made a significant impact, accumulating over 100 appearances for the club. Last season alone, he made 48 appearances across all competitions, including notable outings in the Champions League.
Sunderland’s sporting director, Kristjaan Speakman, recently spoke to Sky Sports, confirming the club’s intention to make further signings before the transfer window closes.
