Last season, Celtic did not maintain their usual stronghold over Rangers in the Glasgow Derby.
Under Brendan Rodgers, Celtic started the Scottish Premiership season with a bang, going unbeaten for 18 games and only dropping four points. By January, they had established a 14-point lead at the top of the table, effectively securing the league title.
This dominant position allowed Celtic to approach the Glasgow Derby matches in January and March without the pressure to secure positive results against Rangers. Despite this, Rangers managed to win both fixtures as Celtic appeared lackluster.
While Rangers celebrated these victories, Ally McCoist acknowledged that the matches held more significance for them than for Celtic, who had already secured the league title in a commanding manner.
McCoist expressed his desire for Rangers to improve domestically and mount a stronger challenge for the title. He emphasized the importance of performing well against Celtic and in Europe to bring pride back to the club.
The results against Rangers highlighted Celtic’s knack for delivering when it truly matters in terms of silverware. Over the years, Celtic have dominated Scottish football, winning 53, drawing 45, and losing 40 games against Rangers since 2000.
Among their standout victories were the famous Demolition Derby under Martin O’Neill, where they won 6-2, and the record-breaking 5-1 victory at Ibrox under Brendan Rodgers in 2017.
