October 13th – In a statement released today by Italy manager Luciano Spalletti, he defended the decision to allow Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Zaniolo to leave the national team’s training camp following their involvement in an investigation. The players were informed of the probe by Turin prosecutors while at the training center in Coverciano, just before the EURO 2024 qualifiers against Malta and England. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) did not disclose any information about the investigation.
During an interview with Sky Sports, Spalletti expressed his support for the decision, although he did not disclose who made it. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing the well-being of the players and explained, “We can’t bring two guys who have been shocked like that to play a game. Now let’s think about playing, we lose two champions but we remain a very strong team.”
Tonali’s and Zaniolo’s agents were contacted for comment but have yet to respond. Spalletti acknowledged that the situation has been challenging for the squad and shared, “It was a difficult night, when you have to get results there is always anxiety, but this was a different night, with a lot of bitterness over what happened. The whole squad is close to Tonali and Zaniolo, we’re very sorry for them. We will continue to be close to them even afterwards.”
He emphasized the need to support and defend the players while also allowing the legal process to unfold. Spalletti added, “For now, they have the spotlight on them. We must try to help them defend themselves, but it’s also right that justice takes its course and if irregularities have occurred, then it will be right to pay.”
In related news, Turin prosecutors announced on Wednesday that Italian footballer Nicolo Fagioli is under investigation for alleged illegal betting activities. Additionally, Federico Chiesa has left the Italy squad due to injury and will return to his club, Juventus.
