Reports suggest that West Ham United is closely monitoring the situation of Wilfried Gnonto at Leeds United. Despite intense speculation surrounding Gnonto’s potential transfer last summer, he ultimately remained with the Championship side.
Although Leeds turned down a £25 million offer from Everton for the player, he has now seen a decrease in playing time, making just 20 appearances in the team’s first 26 league games. West Ham had shown strong interest in the Italian during the summer transfer window when his value was estimated at £40 million.
Gnonto joined Leeds from FC Zurich in a £4 million deal in the summer of 2023. It seems unlikely that the Yorkshire club will be able to command the desired fee for the player, as he is still an attacker with significant potential, but not much else. While it is doubtful that West Ham manager David Moyes would approve a move for Gnonto, the team is in need of effective attackers in wide areas.
Just last season, the Italian speedster was highly regarded as one of Europe’s most promising talents. It is likely that the right manager can help him get back on track, but West Ham may not be the best fit at this time. At the moment, Ajax’s Steven Bergwijn seems like a much better option.
