Tottenham have been rumored to be eyeing a January loan move for Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips. However, reports from football.london indicate that the club has made a decision on a potential deal for the England international.
Phillips, who arrived at Manchester City for an initial fee of around £42 million 18 months ago, is reportedly seeking a move away from the club due to injury issues and stiff competition in Pep Guardiola’s midfield. Despite his talent, Phillips has only managed 16 Premier League appearances since joining the Etihad Stadium.
The 28-year-old is said to be keen on securing regular playing time to boost his chances of making England’s Euro 2024 squad, especially with players like Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice establishing themselves in Gareth Southgate’s team. Several clubs, including Juventus and Newcastle, have been linked with a move for Phillips.
While Tottenham has been mentioned as a potential destination for Phillips, sources suggest that the club is not currently pursuing a deal for the midfielder. This decision is influenced by the depth of talent already available in the midfield, with players like Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Rodrigo Bentancur, Oliver Skipp, Pape Matar Sarr, and Yves Bissouma capable of fulfilling roles in manager Ange Postecoglou’s side.
Despite occasional shortages in the midfield, the return of Bentancur from injury and the availability of Sarr and Bissouma following the Africa Cup of Nations make a move for Phillips seem unnecessary at this time. Instead, Spurs will continue to explore opportunities for promising young talents, potentially considering loan-back deals as they have done with players like Udogie and Sarr.
Tottenham has already made significant investments in transfers this season, securing the services of Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin in January, following the arrivals of Brennan Johnson, James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, Guglielmo Vicario, Alejo Veliz, and Manor Solomon in the summer.
