ANOTHER SAD EXIT: Deadline-day transfer agreed by Sunderland as loan deal is brought to an early end

Sunderland midfielder Adil Aouchiche is set to finalize a permanent transfer to Schalke 04 on deadline day, marking the end of his tenure on Wearside.

The 23-year-old Frenchman spent the first half of the current season on loan with Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership. Although that arrangement was originally intended to last until the summer, Sunderland triggered a recall clause following a weekend of negotiations. Aouchiche has since departed Scotland for Germany to undergo a medical and agree to personal terms with the Gelsenkirchen-based side.

Key Details of the Move:

  • The Destination: Aouchiche joins a Schalke side currently sitting at the top of Bundesliga 2, where he is expected to play a key role in their push for top-flight promotion.
  • Sunderland Legacy: Since arriving from Lorient in 2023, Aouchiche made 38 appearances for the Black Cats. His final game for the club was an FA Cup loss to Stoke City in early 2025.
  • Recent Form: He enjoyed a productive spell at Aberdeen, netting three goals in 30 appearances, and previously spent time on loan at Portsmouth.

While the midfielder reportedly valued his time in Scotland, the opportunity to join a historic club like Schalke on a permanent basis was viewed as a vital step for the next stage of his career.
