If West Ham United had any intentions of launching a summer raid for Swansea City striker Zan Vipotnik, the mountain the Premier League side must climb has just become significantly steeper.
Insiders informed Hammers News toward the end of 2025 that Vipotnik had been heavily recommended by Max Hahn, West Ham’s head of scouting. Hahn, who was brought to the London Stadium by technical director Tim Steidten, has already proven his worth by playing a pivotal role in the successful acquisitions of El Hadji Malick Diouf and Mateus Fernandes. It is understood that Hahn identifies the Slovenian sharpshooter as his primary target for the striker position during the January window. However, the Hammers board instead opted to sanction over £40 million in spending on Taty Castellanos and Pablo Felipe.
Now, according to the official Swansea City website, Vipotnik appears to have silenced any immediate transfer talk by committing his long-term future to the Championship outfit.
New Long-Term Commitment
Vipotnik has officially put pen to paper on a contract extension that ties him to South Wales until the summer of 2030. Speaking on the deal, the former Bordeaux frontman expressed his delight:
”I am really pleased to have signed a new contract with Swansea City. I am really enjoying my football here; the support I have from the coaching staff, my teammates, and the supporters is incredible. I want to make sure we finish the season as strongly as possible, and I hope I can continue to help the team.”
While some of the more cynical sections of the Swansea fanbase might view this extension as a strategic move to protect the market value of a prized asset, the reality is that Vitor Matos’ side is currently struggling to keep pace with the promotion pack. Heading into the weekend, the Swans sat eight points adrift of a play-off berth. Although there is no official word on a release clause, reports from Wales Online suggest Vipotnik was valued at £15 million in January. While Swansea will now negotiate from a position of renewed strength, a fee in that neighborhood is unlikely to deter serious Premier League suitors.
Replacing a Veteran Presence
Described as a “bonafide xG monster,” Zan Vipotnik is widely regarded as an exceptional finisher. He currently leads the Golden Boot race with a staggering 17 goals, remarkably achieved from an expected goals (xG) tally of just 8.
Vitor Matos, the former Liverpool coach now leading Swansea, was full of praise for his star man:
“Zan has enjoyed an excellent season, and his goals have played a big part in the positive results we have enjoyed. This new contract is a deserved reward. We will look to make sure he and the team have a strong end to the season.”
Vipotnik represents a potential long-term successor to Callum Wilson, should West Ham decide not to retain the 34-year-old for another campaign. Despite the heavy investment in Castellanos and Pablo, the duo has struggled for domestic rhythm, managing just two league goals between them since arriving. The Hammers still find themselves lacking a reliable, goal-per-game number nine capable of handling the rigors of a three-match week. Vipotnik fits that profile perfectly, though Swansea will clearly not be bullied into a cut-price deal.
As an alternative, West Ham has reportedly opened discussions with Armando Gonzalez, a prolific poacher currently playing for Chivas Guadalajara in Mexico, as they continue their search for a clinical edge.
