Controversial Red Card in Crystal Palace vs. Leeds United
Former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett has called for referee Thomas Bramall to face a one-match suspension following a high-profile officiating error during the 0-0 draw between Crystal Palace and Leeds United.
The controversy centers on Bramall’s decision to dismiss Leeds defender Gabriel Gudmundsson for a second bookable offense before the halftime whistle. However, the Premier League’s Key Match Incidents (KMI) panel has since reviewed the footage and determined that the challenge did not warrant a second yellow card, meaning the dismissal was incorrect.
Hackett Criticizes Lack of Accountability
Hackett expressed his frustration over the verdict, noting that he had flagged the error almost immediately during the match. While the KMI panel’s ruling vindicates the Yorkshire club, Hackett pointed out that retrospective admissions do little to help a team once the final whistle has blown.
Speaking to MOT Leeds News, Hackett emphasized the need for the PGMOL to take firm action:
”The KMI panel have confirmed that it was an incorrect decision. That, of course, does not help Leeds Utd. What is important is that the PGMOL investigate and follow up on these KMI panel decisions… Thomas Bramall, having made this key error, should receive a one-match ban sanction.”
Frustration for Daniel Farke and the Fans
This incident is part of a troubling pattern for the Whites, who also saw a KMI ruling go in their favor regarding a missed penalty during their 1-0 defeat to Sunderland on March 3. For manager Daniel Farke, these “after-the-fact” apologies are becoming increasingly hollow.
The reality is that while a suspension for Bramall might provide a sense of justice for the Elland Road faithful, it does nothing to restore the points lost in a grueling top-flight relegation battle. There is a growing sentiment that the club must demand greater accountability from the Premier League, as Farke requires fair officiating during the match rather than explanations once the damage is already done.
