The Boston Celtics are already looking ahead to the offseason, and early projections suggest they could make a bold—and potentially divisive—move in the 2026 NBA Draft.
According to a recent mock draft, Boston are tipped to select Duke big man Patrick Ngongba with their late first-round pick. The 6-foot-11 center has drawn attention for his size, instincts, and defensive presence, but opinions around the league remain split.
A unique but limited skill set
Ngongba profiles as a traditional rim-running center. With a reported 7’4” wingspan, he offers strong paint protection and a natural feel for the game, particularly on the defensive end. His passing ability for a big man has also impressed scouts.
However, concerns remain about his offensive ceiling. Unlike modern stretch bigs such as Nikola Vucevic or Luka Garza, Ngongba doesn’t space the floor and relies heavily on interior play.
This has led some evaluators to question how well his game will translate to the pace and style of the NBA.
Why scouts are divided
Ngongba has become one of the more “polarizing” prospects in this draft class. While some scouts believe his all-around fundamentals and defensive instincts make him a safe pick, others are less convinced.
A lack of vertical explosiveness and questions about his rebounding—particularly on the defensive end—have raised doubts about whether he can anchor a defense at the highest level.
Injury history is another red flag. The Duke standout has dealt with foot issues in the past, something that could impact his long-term durability.
Do Boston really need another big?
One of the biggest questions surrounding this potential pick is fit.
The Celtics already have several big men in their rotation, including Neemias Queta and Amari Williams—both of whom share similarities with Ngongba as rim-running centers.
Additionally, Boston must make a key decision on Nikola Vucevic, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent after joining the team at the trade deadline.
If the Celtics choose to re-sign Vucevic, adding another center in the draft could become unnecessary, especially given their current depth in the frontcourt.
A different direction more likely?
Given their roster construction, many believe Boston would be better served targeting a guard or a versatile wing player—areas that could provide more immediate impact and balance.
Head coach Joe Mazzulla has overseen a team built on versatility and spacing, which may not align perfectly with Ngongba’s more traditional skill set.
