A win against Tottenham on Sunday would put West Ham halfway to matching their total number of Women’s Super League victories from 2023. The past year has been challenging for the east London team, earning just two league wins, one under former boss Paul Konchesky and the other with current manager Rehanne Skinner.
As the Women’s Super League returns, Skinner’s bolstered squad sees an opportunity to start afresh after a difficult 2023 season. Despite a 98th-minute equaliser against Leicester, they ended the season just above the foot of the table on goal difference. A positive sign of improvement came in a 3-1 defeat to Chelsea last weekend in the Women’s FA Cup.
Skinner is focused on building a consistent and competitive team, and new signings Kristie Mewis, Katrina Gorry, and Shelina Zadorsky bring experience to a youthful squad. Acknowledging the need for seniority and leadership, Skinner believes these additions will help to manage the group and emotions on the field.
Despite inheriting an inexperienced and depleted squad, Skinner is optimistic about the progress they’ve made, with a goal to ensure their survival in the league while pushing the game to another level. She is not distracted by facing her former club and is solely focused on earning points to distance them from a difficult situation.
