Our exclusive West Ham United columnist, Dr. Daniel Plumley, has highlighted the challenges that the club faces when it comes to releasing players for international competitions like the African Cup of Nations. According to Plumley, West Ham are at a disadvantage in this “who-wins” scenario, as the club does not receive compensation for releasing players in the middle of the season. He pointed out that the timing of the tournament, in contrast to other competitions like the EUROs which are held in the summer, creates additional difficulties for both the club and the country. Plumley emphasized that while the club may not have the power to change the structure of the AFCON, they must be aware of these challenges and consider them when signing new players.
