Rowett Laments Missed Opportunities in Draw Against Wednesday
Leicester City manager Gary Rowett expressed deep dissatisfaction following his team’s 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough. Despite a late equalizer from Jordan Ayew, the result keeps Leicester languishing in the relegation zone with only five matches remaining in the season.
A Costly Start
Rowett criticized his squad’s lack of focus after conceding a goal to Jerry Yates just ninety seconds into the match. He noted that allowing the league’s bottom-placed team an early lead was “ridiculous” and gave the opposition an unnecessary psychological boost.
“They were more aggressive to the ball… that’s been a huge problem for us,” Rowett remarked, highlighting a recurring defensive vulnerability.
Dominance Without Reward
The manager pointed out that despite the early setback, Leicester controlled the flow of the game:
- Possession: Leicester held the vast majority of the ball.
- Chances: The team created numerous scoring opportunities, hitting both the post and the crossbar.
- Opposition Resistance: Wednesday’s goalkeeper made several crucial saves to maintain the deadlock.
Officiating Frustrations
Rowett also voiced his anger over a denied penalty claim involving Jannik Vestergaard. He insisted the defender was clearly pulled down by his shirt in the box, calling the referee’s decision not to award the foul “ridiculous.”
While Rowett acknowledged his disappointment with the overall performance, he maintained that his side had done more than enough to secure a victory.
