For the third consecutive summer, Newcastle United are being strongly linked with a move for highly rated goalkeeper James Trafford — and this time, a deal could finally materialize.
A Transfer Saga Years in the Making
Newcastle’s admiration for Trafford is nothing new. The Magpies came close to securing his signature in 2024 after agreeing personal terms, only for the move to collapse due to financial maneuvering and a separate deal involving Odysseas Vlachodimos.
A £27 million agreement had reportedly been reached with Burnley, but Manchester City stepped in, activating a matching rights clause to bring Trafford back to the Etihad.
Frustration at Manchester City
Trafford’s return to City initially looked promising, especially following the departure of Ederson. However, the unexpected arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain drastically altered the situation.
Limited to just 14 appearances, Trafford has openly admitted his disappointment over a lack of playing time. While maintaining professionalism, the 23-year-old has hinted he could seek a move this summer in search of regular first-team football.

Reports suggest Trafford could be available for between £35 million and £40 million — a figure Newcastle appear willing to consider as they reassess their goalkeeping options.
Current No.1 Nick Pope is approaching 34 and has recently lost his starting spot following inconsistent performances. Meanwhile, Aaron Ramsdale — currently on loan from Southampton — is unlikely to be signed permanently despite a £20 million option.
Newcastle are also monitoring alternatives, including Bart Verbruggen of Brighton & Hove Albion, but Trafford remains a long-standing and highly regarded target.
