Ipswich Town goalkeeper Christian Walton has urged his side to respond with “full confidence and belief” as they prepare for a crucial Championship showdown against Middlesbrough at Portman Road this Sunday.
The Blues head into the fixture looking to steady themselves after a mixed week that saw them enjoy the emotional high of an East Anglian derby victory at Norwich City, only to suffer a disappointing 2–0 defeat away to Portsmouth just days later. That loss ended a nine-match unbeaten run and served as a reminder of the demands of the Championship promotion race.
Despite the setback, Ipswich remain firmly in the hunt for automatic promotion back to the Premier League under manager Kieran McKenna. Walton, speaking after the defeat at Fratton Park, acknowledged the frustration of the performance but stressed the importance of perspective at this decisive stage of the season.
“You’re going to have bumps in the road”
“Obviously it was clear for everyone to see that it was a disappointing performance,” Walton said. “But you’re going to have them in a season and you’re going to have them in blocks of games. We’ve obviously not been beaten for a while.”
He emphasised that Ipswich’s recent consistency should not be forgotten despite the setback in Portsmouth.
“I think it would probably have been naive to think it was going to be plain sailing going into the last eight games. We just need to put up a fight and go onto the next one with full confidence and full belief.”
Walton’s message reflected a wider understanding within the squad that promotion races are rarely straightforward, particularly in a league as competitive as the Championship. With pressure increasing and margins narrowing, Ipswich’s ability to reset quickly between matches could define their season.

“The goals against were not good enough from our point of view. It’s just sloppy moments that cost us tonight,” he explained.
Despite the defeat, Walton felt the game itself was closely contested, with neither side dominating clear chances throughout the match.
“On the night there wasn’t much in the game. I don’t think they’ve carved us open or we’ve carved them open. It’s the small details in games—coming out on top in duels, winning second balls—that make a massive difference and we probably came up short on those.”

“Everyone enjoyed Saturday, it was a good team performance and we wanted to replicate that tonight. We didn’t, that’s disappointing, but it’s onto Sunday now,” he said.
The Ipswich goalkeeper also rejected any suggestion that the defeat was a hangover from the derby win at Carrow Road, instead attributing it to the natural ups and downs of a long season.
“I don’t think so. Everyone enjoyed Saturday, it was a good team performance and we wanted to replicate that tonight. We didn’t, that’s disappointing, but it’s onto Sunday now for another big game in the Championship. We need to go into it with character and belief.”
