Roberto De Zerbi’s turbulent start as Tottenham Hotspur head coach has taken another explosive turn after the Premier League’s Key Match Incidents (KMI) panel admitted a major refereeing error in Spurs’ 1-0 defeat to Sunderland.

The decision adds further weight to Tottenham’s sense of grievance, especially given the impact the incident had on Romero, who has since been ruled out for the remainder of the season.
Pressure mounts on referee Rob Jones
Attention has also quickly turned towards referee Rob Jones, whose handling of the incident is now under renewed scrutiny.
The official has previously faced criticism for inconsistencies surrounding second yellow card decisions, with reports highlighting a pattern of errors across multiple seasons.
Jones has been involved in several overturned or disputed decisions in recent campaigns, including five second-yellow card incidents this season alone that have been flagged as incorrect by officiating reviews.
Across the last two Premier League seasons, he has recorded more errors relating to second bookings than any other referee, further intensifying debate around his consistency at the highest level.
Tottenham supporters, already frustrated by the defeat and Romero’s injury, are expected to view the ruling as confirmation that key moments went against their side in a decisive match.
