Leeds United head coach Daniel Farke has urged his squad to embrace the club’s identity and “side before self” philosophy as they prepare for a high-stakes FA Cup semi-final clash with Chelsea at Wembley on Sunday.
The match marks a significant moment for Leeds, who are appearing in their first FA Cup semi-final in 39 years. Victory would send them to their first final since 1973, reviving memories of a club deeply rooted in tradition, intensity, and expectation.
Farke, now in his third season at Elland Road, stressed that success at Leeds is impossible without understanding its history and emotional weight.
“If you want to be the manager of Leeds United, you have to understand this club,” he said. “You’re not bigger than Leeds United. You have to adapt to the club, not the other way around.”
He emphasised that managers, players, and staff come and go, but the identity of the club must remain constant.
“No one is bigger than the club. Our mantra is side before self,” Farke added, referencing the famous ethos associated with former captain Billy Bremner and the 1972 FA Cup-winning side.
The German coach underlined that Leeds’ strength lies in unity, passion, and connection with supporters, warning against losing sight of the club’s core values.
“You have to value what this club is and not change its DNA. One of the biggest essences of Leeds United is its supporters,” he said.
Farke also made clear that sentiment will not influence his selection decisions at Wembley. While goalkeeper Lucas Perri is expected to return, several players who contributed during the cup run may find themselves on the bench.
“Every player knows he has my full backing, but I don’t give gifts,” he said. “I pick players who make us better.”
He highlighted recent examples of squad impact, pointing to substitutes who changed games, reinforcing his belief that contributions from the bench can be just as important as those from the starting XI.
“We all create something special together,” he said. “Whether you play 90 minutes or 90 seconds, it’s about making an impact.”
Leeds head into the semi-final with some fitness concerns, though Jayden Bogle is expected to recover from a foot issue. Anton Stach remains a doubt with an ankle problem.
Sunday’s meeting with Chelsea at Wembley not only offers a place in the FA Cup final, but also a chance for Leeds to reconnect with their historic identity on one of football’s biggest stages.
