Gary Neville believes Leeds United are in a strong position to avoid relegation, and both their remaining fixtures and Premier League history suggest he may be right.
Recent results briefly tightened the survival race. Nottingham Forest delivered a dominant win over Sunderland, while West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur also picked up important victories. That combination reduced the gap between Leeds and the chasing pack, cutting into what had previously been a comfortable cushion.
Even so, Leeds still hold a key advantage: their fate remains entirely in their own hands. Crucially, their remaining matches come against teams also battling near the bottom of the table, giving them direct control over the outcome rather than relying on other results to go their way.
Neville backs Leeds to get the job done
Speaking with confidence, Neville suggested Leeds are unlikely to slip into danger, pointing in particular to their upcoming fixture against Burnley as a turning point.
He expects Leeds to secure a win in that match, which would effectively ease any lingering concerns and shift the pressure onto their relegation rivals. In his view, the real drama at the bottom of the table will revolve around teams like Tottenham, West Ham, and Forest, who remain more vulnerable heading into the final stretch.
Neville also highlighted how unpredictable the relegation battle has become, describing it as tightly balanced and capable of swinging quickly depending on results. Still, his stance on Leeds remains steady—they are in a favorable position and should have enough to stay up.
Fixtures and history both favour Leeds
Leeds’ run-in includes matches against sides in similar positions, which can often define survival battles. These head-to-head encounters provide opportunities not only to gain points but also to directly deny rivals the same.
Beyond fixtures, historical trends in the Premier League further support Neville’s optimism. Teams with around 40 points are rarely relegated, and such outcomes have become increasingly uncommon in the modern era.
In fact, only a handful of teams have ever gone down with 40 points or more, and none have done so in over two decades. More recently, survival has typically been secured with even fewer points, often in the mid-30s range.
A strong position—but not done yet
While Leeds are not mathematically safe, the combination of their current standing, favorable fixtures, and historical precedent puts them in a reassuring position.
Neville’s assessment reflects a broader reality: barring a dramatic collapse, Leeds are well placed to preserve their Premier League status. However, with the relegation race still finely poised, finishing the job remains essential.
For now, the odds—and the numbers—are firmly on their side.
