Former Sunderland goalkeeper Dave Watson has criticised sections of the club’s fanbase after supporters left the Stadium of Light early during a heavy 5-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest.
The Premier League clash turned sour for the Black Cats after a promising opening spell quickly collapsed once Forest took the lead. Sunderland conceded repeatedly in a difficult first half, with the game effectively decided before the interval as the visitors raced into a commanding advantage.
By the time the scoreline reached 3-0 in the 34th minute, a large number of home supporters had already begun heading for the exits. Some had left before half-time, while others followed shortly after, missing the remainder of a one-sided contest that continued to worsen for the home side.
Watson, speaking on a football podcast, expressed disappointment at that reaction, arguing that it did not reflect the support Sunderland have received throughout the season. While he acknowledged the team’s poor performance on the night, he felt those who departed early failed to stand by the squad during a difficult moment.
He suggested that, given the progress Sunderland have made over the campaign, the fans should have stayed to support the players until the final whistle rather than leaving early once the result became apparent.
Watson also emphasised that both players and supporters bore some responsibility for the atmosphere on the night, but maintained that abandoning the team mid-match undermined the collective effort shown across the season.
A former England youth international, Watson began his career at Barnsley, where he made over 200 senior appearances and played a key role in their promotion to the top flight in the late 1990s. His playing career was cut short at 28 due to a serious knee injury, forcing an early retirement.
Following his playing days, he transitioned into coaching and built a respected career working with several clubs, including spells at Northampton Town, Oldham Athletic, Huddersfield Town, Nottingham Forest and Birmingham City, primarily focusing on goalkeeping development.
The comments have added to discussion around fan behaviour during heavy defeats, particularly in matches where results appear settled early, highlighting the tension between supporter frustration and expectations of loyalty until full-time.
