With a 131–122 win over the Phoenix Suns, Oklahoma City secured a 4–0 series victory and advanced to the Western Conference semifinals for the third straight year. The win also continued a recent trend of first-round dominance, as the Thunder have now swept three consecutive opening playoff series.
The victory carries added significance for head coach Mark Daigneault, who has yet to lose a first-round playoff game in his NBA coaching career. With the latest win, his record in opening-round postseason matchups improved to an unblemished 12–0, a rare feat that reflects both consistency and strong preparation from his team.
While Oklahoma City’s roster talent—led by star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander—has been a major driver of success, Daigneault’s coaching decisions have also played a crucial role throughout the series. This latest matchup against Phoenix was considered the most challenging first-round test the Thunder have faced in recent seasons, especially with injuries affecting key rotation players.
Despite losing Jalen Williams early in the series due to a hamstring issue and also dealing with the absence of Isaiah Joe in parts of the matchup, Oklahoma City maintained control. The coaching staff was forced to adjust quickly, reshaping the rotation and experimenting with different lineup combinations to maintain balance on both ends of the floor.
One notable adjustment included inserting Ajay Mitchell into the starting lineup, a move that initially came with mixed results. Mitchell struggled in his first playoff start, but Daigneault opted to stay with the young guard rather than make immediate changes. That decision paid off in Game 4, when Mitchell delivered a breakout performance with 22 points, six assists, and four rebounds while finishing as one of the game’s most impactful players.
Other players, including Cason Wallace and Jared McCain, also saw expanded responsibilities as the coaching staff redistributed minutes to compensate for injuries. These rotational tweaks helped maintain offensive flow and defensive stability throughout the series.
Under Daigneault’s leadership, Oklahoma City has continued to build a reputation for adaptability and depth. Since taking over ahead of the 2020–21 season, he has guided the franchise through a rebuild phase into consistent playoff contention.
