The defeat leaves Rangers trailing in the Scottish Premiership standings, now sitting four points behind the leaders and slipping to third place. While the performance itself raised concerns, attention has largely shifted to a key first-half incident involving Djeidi Gassama.
Former FIFA referee Mark Clattenburg has weighed in on the situation, suggesting Rangers were unfortunate not to be awarded a penalty. The flashpoint came when Motherwell’s Lukas Fadinger challenged Gassama, with referee Kevin Clancy awarding a free-kick just outside the box.
However, upon reviewing broadcast footage, Clattenburg argued that the initial contact actually began inside the penalty area. In such cases, VAR intervention is expected to prompt an on-field review, but that opportunity never came.
According to Clattenburg, while it is understandable that the referee may have been uncertain in real time, the absence of a VAR recommendation was a significant oversight. Multiple camera angles appeared to show the foul starting within the box, which would typically warrant a penalty decision.
Rangers manager Danny Röhl also voiced his frustration after the match. He maintained that the challenge occurred on the line—effectively inside the penalty area—but questioned why officials did not take a closer look at the incident.
Beyond that moment, Röhl hinted that several marginal decisions throughout the match seemed to favor Motherwell. Still, he stopped short of blaming the result solely on officiating, acknowledging that his side created enough opportunities to influence the outcome.
Despite showing attacking intent at times, Rangers struggled to impose consistent control over the game, allowing Motherwell to capitalize and secure all three points. The result not only dents their title hopes but also intensifies scrutiny on refereeing standards and VAR usage in crucial fixtures.
