Aston Villa boss Unai Emery was left furious after his side’s narrow 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest in their Europa League semi-final first leg, lashing out at a controversial VAR decision he believes changed the course of the match.

“It is a huge mistake,” Emery stated, stressing that VAR exists precisely for incidents of this nature. He added that he expected an explanation for why the challenge was not escalated, suggesting inconsistency in decision-making is undermining trust in the system.
The controversy added further tension to an already tightly contested semi-final. Forest, meanwhile, capitalised on their opportunity, with the decisive moment arriving in the 70th minute. A handball decision against Lucas Digne—confirmed after VAR review—led to the penalty, which Chris Wood confidently converted.
Nottingham Forest manager Vitor Pereira praised his team’s resilience and discipline, particularly given injury setbacks and squad rotation. He highlighted their defensive organisation and mentality, insisting his side remained committed to playing on the front foot despite the narrow advantage.
