Wayne Rooney has issued a stark warning about West Ham United’s Premier League survival chances, admitting he is now “worried” for the Hammers after their heavy defeat to Brentford.
Speaking on Match of the Day, the former England captain shifted his earlier stance on the relegation battle following a dramatic round of fixtures that has tightened the race at the bottom of the table.
West Ham’s 3-0 loss exposed serious defensive issues, prompting Rooney to reconsider his previous belief that Tottenham Hotspur were the most likely to go down.
“Last week I said Spurs,” Rooney explained. “But this week, after watching West Ham’s defending, I am very worried for them. They’ve all got tough games.”
While uncertainty continues to surround several teams near the drop zone, Rooney expressed confidence that Nottingham Forest have likely done enough to survive. His biggest concern now lies with West Ham, who remain dangerously close to the relegation places with only a handful of games left.
In contrast, Leeds United appear to have taken a decisive step toward safety.
A 3-1 victory over Burnley lifted Leeds to 43 points—a total that has historically been enough to guarantee survival in a 38-game Premier League season. Although not mathematically secure, Rooney believes Daniel Farke’s side can begin to breathe easier.
“I think they will stay in the Premier League,” he added.
Leeds’ strong position could also have a major influence on how the relegation battle unfolds. With upcoming fixtures against both Tottenham and West Ham, they may yet play a decisive role in determining which club drops into the Championship.
