Newcastle United have emerged as frontrunners in the race to sign Sporting CP striker Luis Suárez, following a sensational debut season in Portugal that has seen him register 44 goal contributions.
The Colombian forward has been one of the standout attacking performers in Europe this season, quickly establishing himself as a key figure for Sporting CP after arriving from UD Almería in a deal worth €22.95 million last summer.
His impact has been immediate. Suárez has scored 35 goals and added nine assists in 50 appearances, stepping seamlessly into the role previously held by Viktor Gyökeres, who departed for Arsenal.
Now, his form has attracted serious interest from the Premier League, with Newcastle United currently believed to be leading the chase.
Reports from Portugal via Correio da Manhã suggest that Eddie Howe’s side have already made initial enquiries about the striker’s availability as they look to strengthen their attacking options ahead of next season.
Newcastle are understood to be prioritising a new forward after struggling to fully replace Alexander Isak following his departure last summer. Despite improvements in other areas of the squad, the Magpies remain eager to add more consistent firepower.
Suárez is viewed as an ideal candidate due to his versatility and finishing ability. While primarily deployed as a central striker, he is also capable of operating from the left, giving tactical flexibility that Howe values highly.
Sporting, however, are in a strong negotiating position. Suárez is under contract until 2030, and the Portuguese club are reportedly demanding his €80 million release clause be triggered before allowing any departure.
That valuation presents a major obstacle for Newcastle, especially given Financial Fair Play considerations and their cautious approach to large summer spending in recent windows.
Although the player’s current market value is estimated to be significantly lower, Sporting’s stance remains firm, meaning any deal would require a substantial investment from interested clubs.
Newcastle’s interest is clear, but whether they are willing or able to meet those demands remains uncertain. Much may depend on potential outgoings, with the club still assessing its attacking depth ahead of a pivotal transfer window.
