Dharmesh Sheth has provided an update on the agreement between West Ham United and Manchester City for the signing of Kalvin Phillips, indicating that the Hammers could secure him for around £35 million.
David Moyes’ team has reached a deal to bring in the 28-year-old midfielder on loan from the Premier League champions for the rest of the season, with Phillips set to undergo a medical on Wednesday (24 January).
In addition, Sheth believes that West Ham has the option to purchase Phillips permanently in the summer for a price of roughly £35 million. There is no rush to finalize the deal, as the next game is on deadline day night against Bournemouth at the London Stadium, meaning the club has time to assess the situation.
This deal positions West Ham well as they have not made a significant financial commitment. The buy-option gives them control over Phillips’ future and is a promising opportunity, given that Manchester City paid more than £35 million to sign him from Leeds United 18 months ago.
The onus is now on Phillips to prove himself at West Ham and demonstrate why he deserves a permanent move. If he can hit the ground running and return to his Leeds United form, the decision to activate the £35 million option will be an easy one.
