AS Roma Trigger €25m Clause to Sign Donyell Malen Permanently from Aston Villa

AS Roma have officially activated the €25 million buy clause to sign Donyell Malen on a permanent deal from Aston Villa after securing European qualification for next season.

The Dutch forward initially joined Roma on loan during the January transfer window, but the agreement included a conditional obligation-to-buy clause tied to the club qualifying for either the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League. With Roma now guaranteed European football, the clause has automatically become active.

Malen’s impact in Italy has been immediate and decisive. Since arriving at the Stadio Olimpico, the 27-year-old has emerged as one of Roma’s standout performers, scoring consistently in Serie A and quickly becoming a fan favourite. Reports indicate he has already reached double figures in goals during his short spell in Rome, including crucial performances against Napoli and Cagliari.

The agreement between the two clubs reportedly required two conditions to be fulfilled: Roma qualifying for European competition and Malen featuring in at least 50% of the club’s matches while on loan. Both targets have now been achieved, sealing the permanent transfer.

Roma’s decision to secure Malen permanently underlines the club’s confidence in the attacker as a key figure for the future under manager Gian Piero Gasperini. The forward’s pace, versatility, and clinical finishing have transformed Roma’s attack during the second half of the season.

For Aston Villa, the deal represents a solid financial return after signing Malen from Borussia Dortmund in 2025. Villa are also believed to have negotiated additional future-sale benefits as part of the agreement.

Malen is expected to sign a long-term contract with Roma running until 2030, as the Giallorossi continue building a squad capable of competing consistently in both Serie A and European competitions.
