Newcastle United’s summer overhaul has officially begun, with manager Eddie Howe confirming that long-serving academy graduate Max Thompson will depart the club upon the expiry of his contract this summer.
The announcement came following Newcastle’s final home fixture of the 2025/26 campaign—a 3-1 victory over West Ham United. During the post-match lap of honor, Howe took a moment to acknowledge the contributions of several departing staff and players, including the 21-year-old goalkeeper.
A Decade of Service
Thompson’s departure marks the end of a ten-year journey with the Magpies. Having joined the Newcastle academy at the age of 11, the youngster became a familiar face around the first-team set-up, often training alongside the senior squad.
While he never made a competitive first-team appearance for United, his importance to the club’s structure was evident during the 2025/26 season. Thompson was named on the bench for Newcastle’s opening seven Champions League matches and was included in the club’s ‘List B’ squad for Europe, fulfilling a vital role in meeting UEFA’s homegrown player requirements.
In January, Thompson sought senior experience, joining Scottish Championship side Ayr United on loan. He made 10 appearances during his time north of the border, providing him with a first taste of consistent professional football before returning to St. James’ Park for the end of the season.
The Goalkeeping Overhaul
Thompson is just one piece of a significant reshuffle in Newcastle’s goalkeeping department. With the club looking to modernize and refresh its options, the exit strategy is clear:

Addressing the departures, Howe spoke warmly about those moving on, including Thompson—the son of Newcastle’s long-serving kit man, Ray Thompson. “Today was slightly different, because we’re focusing really on Kieran [Trippier] and Emil [Krafth] and Paul Catterson, Max Thompson, people that will leave us who have done a great job for us on and off the pitch,” Howe said. “They’ve been incredible servants to the football club, and we’re going to miss them.”
