The San Antonio Spurs have spent the last year building one of the NBA’s most exciting young contenders around Victor Wembanyama. After a remarkable playoff run and another productive offseason, there is growing belief that the Spurs are legitimate championship contenders heading into the 2026-27 season.

But one blockbuster rumor could suddenly make their road to the NBA Finals a lot more difficult.

The latest whispers around the league suggest that the Denver Nuggets could emerge as a surprise destination for Boston Celtics superstar Jaylen Brown. And if that happens, the entire balance of power in the Western Conference could shift overnight.

Why This Is a Problem for San Antonio

The Spurs already face a brutal challenge in the West.

The Oklahoma City Thunder remain one of the deepest teams in basketball. The Minnesota Timberwolves continue to be a major threat. And, of course, the Nuggets still employ the best player on the planet in Nikola Jokic.

Now imagine adding a player of Brown’s caliber to that equation.

Could Denver Actually Pull It Off?

At the moment, the Portland Trail Blazers remain the team most heavily linked with Brown. They possess a treasure chest of draft picks and can likely outbid almost anyone if Boston decides to move its superstar.

However, reports have indicated that Denver has at least explored the possibility of entering the race.

The Nuggets would need to put together a complicated package involving players such as Aaron Gordon, Cameron Johnson, Peyton Watson, and draft compensation. A third team could even become necessary to make the finances work.

Would it be difficult? Absolutely.

Would it be impossible? Not at all.

And that possibility alone should have Spurs fans paying close attention.
