Newcastle United could be on the verge of one of the biggest transfer sagas of the summer after reports emerged that Tottenham Hotspur have made a serious move for midfield star Sandro Tonali.
The Italian international is believed to have agreed a six-year contract in principle with Spurs, with the proposed deal reportedly worth around £275,000 per week. While no transfer fee has yet been agreed between the clubs, the developments have sparked fears that one of Eddie Howe’s most important players could be heading for the exit door.
Newcastle have already rejected an offer believed to be worth around £80 million earlier this month. However, Tottenham have not given up and are expected to return with an improved bid if they believe they can reach the Magpies’ asking price.
The situation is significantly different from previous speculation surrounding Bruno Guimaraes, where interested clubs failed to make concrete approaches. This time, Tottenham have reportedly gone beyond informal discussions and placed themselves firmly at the negotiating table.

Another factor adding intrigue to the saga is De Zerbi’s relationship with Tonali’s agent, Giuseppe Riso. The agent has never hidden his belief that Tonali could one day move on from Newcastle and compete at the very highest level of European football.
Speaking earlier this year, Riso suggested that Newcastle’s financial strength made the original transfer possible, but also hinted that the player’s long-term ambitions could eventually lead elsewhere.
Despite the growing speculation, Newcastle have publicly maintained their position. Chief executive David Hopkinson recently insisted that any player under contract would only leave if the club decides the terms are right and if the move represents maximum value for Newcastle United.
