The Thorp Arch production line continues to deliver. Leeds United have officially confirmed that Academy midfielder Loui Whitehead has signed his first professional contract with the club. The 17-year-old playmaker has put pen to paper on a two-year deal, locking down his future at Elland Road until the summer of 2028.
A Breakthrough Season
Whitehead’s rise to the professional ranks is the result of a standout 2025/26 campaign where he became a key figure in the youth setup. Across all competitions, the midfielder made 29 appearances for the club, showcasing his tactical intelligence and growth.
His development was fast-tracked as he earned a debut and four subsequent appearances for Scott Gardner’s Under-21 side. During this time, Whitehead gained elite experience competing against high-level opposition in the Premier League International Cup—including ties against Athletic Club B and RSC Anderlecht Futures—as well as gaining valuable minutes in Premier League 2 against giants like Liverpool and Arsenal.
“It Is All I Have Ever Worked Towards”
Speaking after the signing, a clearly proud Whitehead reflected on his journey, which began at the club when he was just an Under-9 player.
“It is a proud moment for me,” Whitehead said. “I have been working for this all the way since I started and it is all I have ever wanted, really… I feel like I have got better technically, but also physically. I have grown a bit more, so I can deal with bigger players now.”
Describing his own game, the youngster highlighted his technical edge: “I would probably say I am a more technical player. I play with passes and the range of passing is good. I play a lot of forward passes.”
The Path Ahead
For Leeds United, securing Whitehead’s future is a clear vote of confidence in the club’s academy infrastructure. As he transitions into professional football, the goal will be to build on his 2025/26 momentum, continue his physical development, and push for more consistent minutes in the U21s.
